On Observing Monastic Traditions

Ven. Master Hsuan Hua

The daily ceremonies at Gold Mountain Monastery include the morning and evening recitations, and a sutra lecture in the evening. The boards should be struck fifteen minutes before the evening recitation and sutra lecture, to remind people to get ready. Not only do people have to get ready for the ceremonies and sutra lectures, all the good spirits who protect the Dharma—the gods, dragons and the rest of the eightfold pantheon—are also waiting to protect the bodhimanda. Therefore, we cannot be sloppy. If the person assigned to hit the boards occasionally forgets his job, others should remind him so as to avoid wasting time. This evening, the boards were not hit until 7:10 p.m. That was a major mistake. From now on you should be especially mindful of this.
